What is I Love This Diet?

I Love This Diet is a dietitian-designed online weight loss program that uses specially-approved frozen entrees from Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice, Smart Ones, Amy's, Michelina's and other supermarket favorites.

Members select their foods from dietitian-approved lists on their personalized Daily Food Journal, after being assigned a maximum daily calorie limit based on their weight and gender.

The program comes in the form of a membership site that is easy to use from any computer and just about any tablet or smartphone. To see it in action, play the video below:

Actually, I Love This Diet uses all of these products (and others) in its meal plan, but it is unaffiliated with the manufacturers of Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice, Smart Ones, or any of the other foods used in its program. The meals were selected for nutritional reasons as well as to provide great taste and variety to its members.

Selected frozen entrees from Amy's Kitchen, Kashi, Michelina's, Luvo, Evol, Eating Right (Safeway/Albertson's brand), Trader Joe's, Saffron Road, and Sweet Earth are also part of the plan for all members in the USA. Canadian members have different meals choices available (about 200 different frozen meals vs the 350+ available in the US).

I Love This Diet costs $49.97 for a 6 month membership or $59.97 for a one year membership. The diet program's website can be accessed from any computer with internet access (both PC and MAC), as well as iPads, iPhones, and Android-based smartphones and tablets.  There are no monthly fees.  Food is purchased at your supermarket. Diet is purchased at ilovethisdiet.com.

I Love This Diet website also provides its members with constantly updated links to discounts and coupons for products from Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice, Smart Ones and many other approved foods found on the plan.

The diet is designed for Americans and Canadians only (doesn't work in Australia or New Zealand).  Immediately after purchasing, dieters are asked to click a box for either USA or Canada, depending on their location. This is because the manufacturers' menus for the two countries are not identical. Canadian members have access to Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice, Smart Ones, Amy's, Michelina's, Stouffers, President's Choice, VH Steamers, and Compliments.

How the Diet Works

The diet is very simple.  You’ll be assigned one of five calorie levels of between 1300  and 1850 calories per day, based on your current weight, and your gender.

As you lose weight, your calorie level shifts accordingly.  Dieters can expect to lose an average of 1 - 2 pounds per week on the program.

Members go to their Daily Food Journal each day to select their meals, veggies, fruit, and snacks from approved lists, by clicking on them. The Daily Food Journal calculates everything automatically, from calories to your daily progress in reaching the recommended fruit, veggie, and dairy servings.


Each morning you’ll eat one of the more than 70 low-calorie, nutritionally-balanced breakfast options from the I Love This Diet Breakfast Guide. Most are under 350 calories and include a dairy and fruit serving. Selections range from cereal to bagels, pancakes, and more exciting dishes like breakfast parfaits and soufflés.

Lunch and Dinner

Most members choose to have a frozen meal for lunch, and a frozen meal for dinner. As with all foods on the program, calories are tallied automatically as you select them, and you are also credited with veggie, fruit, and dairy servings contained in the frozen meals you eat, which show on your Daily Food Journal to keep you on track nutritionally.

When You Don’t Feel Like Eating a Prepared Frozen Meal…

On those days when you’d rather cook, you may swap your frozen entrée for one of the many low-calorie recipes from the Love Cookbook, which is on the member website. You can also substitute a quick and easy option from the Salad Guide, such as a Soup and Salad Combo.

Yet another option is to use the Build Your Own Meal feature, which allows you to create a version of just about any meal, as long as you stick to I Love This Diet's approved foods as ingredients.

Sodium Content

Most frozen meals in the frozen food aisle are not allowed in this program for nutritional reasons. The most common disqualified is sodium content. Even for the approved brands of frozen entrees on this plan, some of the individual meals are banned from the "clickable" approved lists because the plan's dietitians have deemed them too high in sodium to qualify. The program stresses that it only uses the lowest sodium frozen meals.


The "Build Your Own Salad" feature gives you almost complete flexibility to create a robust meal-sized salad from dietitian-approved lists of ingredients from different food categories. You can add almost anything to your salad to make it a filling meal: cheese, nuts, chicken or steak strips, etc.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruit and veggies must be added each day for optimum nutrition, as well as dairy (or dairy substitutes).


If hunger strikes in between meals, choose from a variety of healthy, filling, snack ideas from the Hunger Helper Guide. Here you'll find approved varieties of yogurt cups, string cheese, whole grain bread, even grilled fish fillets (salmon or tilapia).


In addition to the Hunger Helpers, you are allowed one daily “just fun” snack or dessert (cookies, chocolate, baked potato chips, popcorn, etc.)  The I Love This Diet Treats Guide provides a list of delicious, filling, low calorie snacks and desserts, all under 100 calories each.

The Advantages of I Love This Diet

It’s cheap, it’s easy, and you should lose 1 – 2 pounds per week. Its great variety will keep you from feeling deprived.

Cost of I Love This Diet

I Love This Diet costs a one-time fee of $49.97 for a 6 month membership, or $59.97 for a 12 month membership, plus the cost of the food, which you’ll buy in your local supermarket. You are only billed once (i.e. $59.97 covers the entire year). Unlike many companies, I Love This Diet does NOT automatically renew your membership when it expires. The Cost of the Food

Using store promotions, manufacturers coupons, tips, and savings info provided regularly by the I Love This Diet MoneySaver, you should be able to buy many of your frozen meals for around $2.00 each.  That adds up to $112.00 for 4 weeks worth of frozen entrees. Breakfast costs for same period would average $56. Your daily snack should average less than $1.00 per day bringing the food cost up to $196 per four week period, not including fruits, veggies, and milk.   In comparison, Jenny Craig will run you an average of $550 to $650 for the same four week period, which also doesn’t include fruits, veggies and diary.

Effectiveness for Weight Loss

I Love This Diet isn’t a crash diet.  Expect a 1 – 2 pound loss per week.

How Easy is It to Stick to this Diet?

I Love This Diet will work for many people not only because it’s budget-friendly, but because of the variety it offers. There are over 275 frozen meals to choose from, including everything from pizza to chicken teriyaki.  You won't easily burnout on this meal plan because of the large variety of food from multiple food manufacturers (which can be a problem with Jenny Craig, which offers fewer than 70 frozen meals.)  That said, you’ll have to make do with fewer calories than you’re probably used to (it is a diet!) Depending on your weight and your gender, you'll be eating between 1300 and 1850 calories per day.

The Drawbacks.

I Love This Diet doesn’t offer counseling or weigh-ins. Since it is inexpensive, it can’t afford to. The site does offer member forums where I Love This Dieters can read other members' advice, and share their own experiences.

Like Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, and other pre-prepared meal plans, the diet is relatively high in sodium. That said, the average I Love This Dieter will consume less sodium than the USDA's recommended daily maximum, and far less sodium than the average American takes in each day.

Yes if:

  • You’re busy and you want something easy and convenient.  This is about as easy as dieting gets.
  • You’re on a budget.
  • You don’t particularly like cooking.
  • You tried Jenny or Nutrisystem and needed more meal choices to keep from getting bored taste buds.
  • You are a Weight Watchers member who is feeling temporarily burned out, and needing a change to to jump-start your weight loss to reach your goal weight, before returning to Weight Watchers for maintenance.

No if:

  • You can’t stand the thought of eating processed food, like frozen meals.
  • You need personal diet support, such as public weigh-ins and counselors.
  • You have a passion for cooking.
  • You have high blood pressure or other illness that requires a medically low sodium diet.
  • You have to cook for a big family, and you are the only one who needs to lose weight.
  • You are pregnant, nursing, or under 18 years of age.
