Nutrisystem Day 1 - Small Portion Size

Nutrisystem Day 1 - Small Portion Size

Today's Nutrisystem Tips...

* Nutrisystem portion sizes are SMALL.

Prepare yourself emotionally, and remind yourself that you won't be eating like this forever, or you might freak out. And make sure you add vegetables!

And now, here are the details of my 1st day on Nutrisystem...

What I Weighed Today: 206.6 lbs. (8am)

I struggled mightily today.  I was hungry and I lamented all the things I did not indulge in on my last days of pre-diet freedom.  Don’t get me wrong, I lived it up over the last week.  And for my swan song I went to a “Gourmet Five-Year-Old’s” Party.  It was not actually for a 5-year-old.  It was held at a hotel bar in Hollywood and gourmet chefs were there making fancy versions of childhood favorites.  There were Kobe Beef Sloppy Joes, Mac & Cheese with Brie & Lobster, and PBJ made with duck liver and peach glaze.

On my way home I picked up a large PinkBerry frozen yogurt with Captain Crunch and Fruity Pebbles on top. That  was then. This is now. Now, being my first day on Nutrisystem.

What I Ate Today:
Breakfast: NS Low-Fat Granola, Soy Milk, 1 Apple – 160 calories
Lunch: NS Cheese Tortellini, 2 cups Cucumber, Non-Fat Yogurt, 4 cups Coffee w/8 tablespoons Fat-Free Creamer & 4 tablespoons Sugar-Free Hazelnut syrup – 341.2 calories
Snack: 1 Low-Fat String Cheese, 2 cups Baby Carrots  – 120 calories
Dinner: NS Wedged Potatoes with Sliced Beef Steak, 5 cups Arugula, 2 tablespoons Girard’s Light Champagne Dressing – 308 calories
Dessert: NS Strawberry Shortcake Bar– 160 calories

5 ‘full’ push-ups
10 ‘half’ push-ups
30 sit-ups
10 minutes of stretching

I've promised myself I'm going to stick to Nutrisystem for 28 days. And who knows?  After 28 days on Nutri-stuff, maybe my old eating habits will have changed, and I won’t even want Basmati rice cooked in chicken broth, baked chicken drippings, and a half stick of butter.  Okay, fat chance.  VERY fat chance.

So I know you want to know about the Nutrisystem food, so here’s my first take on it after one day:  I wasn’t bowled over by the food, to put it mildly. First of all, there isn’t very much of it, but I expected that.  The biggest problem is taste. So far, not thrilled with the taste. You see, the problem is I LOVE GOOD FOOD!

I like to take a bite of food and let it take over my body.  I like to lean back and close my eyes and savor each bite.  I pretty much got this in and down as fast as I could.  The goal was to nourish myself and feel full.  I’m hoping this isn’t how it is going to be every day because I like food waaay too much not to occasionally enjoy it.

There's an old joke. Uh, two elderly women are at a Catskills mountain resort, and one of 'em says, "Boy, the food at this place is really terrible." The other one says, "Yeah, I know, and such small portions." Well, that's essentially how I feel about life. -Woody Allen

The food I ate today was questionable at best and I feel a little trapped by the fact that I don’t really have the freedom to go outside of these meals.  I get to put some veggies, fruit, and a little piece of cheese with the entrées each day but that’s pretty much it.

I know I’m bitching but make no mistake, I will see this through to the end.  Boring food is a small price to pay for a hot body.  However, I’m kind of feeling like a woman who’s been married 40 years (“I’ll do it but I ain’t gonna like it!”).

The Nutrisystem food I ate today:
* NS Low-Fat Granola – 160 calories
YUM! Standard low-fat granola.  Pretty hard to mess this up.  I enjoyed it and certainly would eat it again.  Serving size is small, though.  I was actually able to put the entire serving and a ½ cup of soy milk into a bodkin (that’s the little dish they serve crème brulee in).
* NS Cheese Tortellini – 150 calories
WTF? Weirdly gross.  It came in one of those containers where you pop the aluminum ring on the top and peel off the top, then microwave it.  I was hoping the packaging was not indicative of the quality of the food but it was.  The tomato sauce was screamingly tomato-y.  It was so tart it made my jaw hurt.  Then the tortellini left this dry coating in my mouth after I swallowed.  I was starving so I choked it down. Hope I didn’t order 2 of these.
* NS Wedged Potatoes with Sliced Beef Steak – 220 calories
MEH. This was decent.  It was one of the vacuum sealed entrees which I am still having difficulty getting comfortable with the concept of.  There is something so wrong with meat dishes that don’t need to be preserved in a refrigerator.  Surprisingly, the beef was tender and the dish was well seasoned.  However, the sauce had a weird ’fake’ texture to it.  It was like they had used gelatin to thicken it.  It was probably some alien DNA they use to preserve meat so it doesn’t have to go into the fridge.
* NS Strawberry Shortcake Bar– 160 calories
YUM! Good from start to finish.  Began to taste a little like strawberries and bananas for some reason but that was good, too.  Hope I have another one of these.
