Medifast Shakes: Taste Reviews and Nutrition Info

Here’s everything you need to know about Medifast shakes!Medifast Dark Choco antioxidant product v2.JPG

The Basics – Powdered Mixes vs Ready-to-Drink

Medifast shakes can be purchased in two different forms: shake powder mix and Ready-to-Drink. Both are around 100 calories, and come in several flavors.

The Ready-to-Drink shakes taste better, but cost more. We’ll review every flavor of each type, in a moment. Please note that some of the shakes are lactose free, and some are gluten free. You will see this in the individual reviews that follow.

The Purpose of Medifast Shakes

Medifast uses very low calorie diet plans (lower than Nutrisystem or Jenny Craig). Their shakes are designed to provide necessary nutrition and fiber, and help keep dieters’ hunger down, hopefully for 2-3 hours.

These shakes actually count as a Medifast meal (though there are 6 small meals per day on the plan.) If you are not following the Medifast plan and just like the shakes as a filling (but expensive) snack, remember that they are too low in calories to replace a traditional meal.

Where To Buy Medifast Shakes

You can buy any shake flavor, at the Medifast website which is Medifast1.com, or at Amazon.com. All Medifast weight-loss plans, even the 14-Day Kit, include certain flavors of these shakes.

Standard prices:

•    Medifast Shake Powder Mix (any flavor) - $3.00 per single serving pouch or $19.50 for a box of 7 servings
•    Medifast Ready-to-Drink Shake (any flavor) - $3.35 per individual shake or $66.75 for a case of 24 servings

Here are the Medifast Taste Reviews, starting with the Powdered Mix recipes:

Medifast Dutch Chocolate Shake (Powder Mix) - 100 Calories

This flavor is gluten-free, but contains lactose and soy. It is a certified Kosher (dairy).

Taste Rating: 5/10

This is supposedly Medifast’s most often purchased shake flavor, but in truth, you’ll either love it or hate it, which is a problem because the minimum purchase is 7 shakes, and they’re not cheap.

Chocolate lovers and those with limited taste expectations liked it more than others. Those who said that they didn’t like it, complained of a “Medifast aftertaste.”

Ingredients: Soy protein isolate, fructose, dextrin, cocoa (processed with alkali), whey protein concentrate, modified food starch, chicory root extract (inulin), soy lecithin, salt, cellulose gum, natural and artificial flavor, acesulfame potassium, corn syrup, xanthan gum, carrageenan, caramel color.

Medifast French Vanilla Shake (Powder Mix) - 110 Calories

This flavor is gluten-free. It contains lactose and soy. It is certified Kosher (dairy).

Taste Rating: 7/10

This is another love-it-or-hate-it product. The drink’s taste and thin consistency are really up for debate.

The saving grace for this shake, however, is that there are tons of ways you can spruce it up. Add anything from cinnamon to diet soda (it makes a nice float), or use it as an ingredient in smoothies.

And it is filling, so if you’re in the mood (and have the time) to whip up a fancier vanilla concoction, this one will still satisfy.

Ingredients: Soy protein isolate, fructose, dextrin, whey protein concentrate, modified food starch, soy lecithin, salt, cellulose gum, natural and artificial flavors, acesulfame potassium, corn syrup, xanthan gum, carrageenan, caramel color.

Medifast Mocha Shake (Powder Mix) - 110 Calories

This flavor is gluten-free. It contains lactose and soy. It is certified Kosher (dairy).

Taste Rating: 7/10

In true Medifast fashion, this Mocha shake powder is a hit-or-miss, especially when it comes to taste. But those who like this flavor don’t just like it – they absolutely love it.

In fact, even though this flavor isn’t as popular sales-wise as chocolate, those who’ve tried it say it’s probably their favorite Medifast powdered shake.

Just be sure to prepare this well. If you find that it doesn’t dissolve in water completely, one dieter advises to mix it with “warm water first and then put in cold water.”

Ingredients: Soy protein isolate, fructose, dextrin, whey protein concentrate, chicory root extract (inulin), instant coffee, cellulose gum, soy lecithin, salt, cocoa (processed with alkali), modified corn starch, natural and artificial flavor, xanthan gum, acesulfame potassium, carrageenan, corn syrup, caramel color.

Medifast Orange Cream Shake (Powder Mix) - 110 Calories

This flavor is gluten-free. It contains lactose and soy. It is certified Kosher (dairy).

Taste Rating: 8/10

A lot of people are hesitant to try orange-flavored shakes because, let’s face it, so many of these drinks taste like cough syrup. Surprisingly, Medifast’s orange shake powder tastes less like medicine and more like orange sherbet.

Sure, that makes it a tad too sweet for breakfast, and sure, the artificial flavor is pretty obvious, but if you can get past those, you can enjoy a filling, low-calorie treat with this one.

Ingredients: Soy protein isolate, fructose, dextrin, whey protein concentrate, modified food starch, salt, soy lecithin, cellulose gum, citric acid, natural and artificial flavor, acesulfame potassium, xanthan gum, beta carotene (color), carrageenan.

Medifast Strawberry Shake (Powder Mix) - 100 Calories

This flavor is gluten-free. It contains lactose and soy. It is certified Kosher (dairy).

Taste Rating: 8/10

Medifast’s strawberry-flavored shake mix is actually not bad. It’s as yummy as you would expect any diet strawberry shake to be, and as filling as it promises.

The question of the cost of these shakes sometimes pops up when you're drinking them. Some dieters believe that other brands of strawberry weight-loss shakes are just as good but for lower prices.

Ingredients: Soy protein isolate, fructose, dextrin, whey protein concentrate, modified food starch, salt, soy lecithin, cellulose gum, citric acid, beet powder (color), acesulfame potassium, natural and artificial flavor, xanthan gum, carrageenan.

Medifast Dark Chocolate Antioxidant Shake (Powder Mix) - 90 Calories

This flavor is gluten-free. It contains lactose and soy lecithin. It is NOT Kosher.

Taste Rating: 9/10

This flavor is special in two ways: it’s rich in antioxidants, and it’s formulated for dieters who are sensitive to soy. And it doesn’t hurt that it’s delicious! It’s actually one of the favorites of Medifast dieters. This flavor has 90 calories instead of the 100 calories in all the other flavors. If you haven't tried a powdered shake from Medifast yet, this is the one to start with.

Ingredients: Whey protein isolate, cocoa powder, calcium caseinate, erythritol, chicory root extract (inulin), fructose, modified food starch, dextrin, natural and artificial flavor, xanthan gum, salt, acesulfame potassium, nutraceutical blend (grape seed extract, wild blueberry powder, wild bilberry powder, cranberry powder, tart cherry powder, prune powder, raspberry seed powder, strawberry powder, resveratrol, quercetin), soy lecithin.

READY-TO-DRINK SHAKES

Medifast Dutch Chocolate Ready-to-Drink Shake - 100 Calories

This flavor is lactose-free. It contains gluten and soy. It is certified Kosher (dairy).

Taste Rating: 8/10

While the powder mix version of this shake isn’t exactly well-loved, this ready-to-drink variety is a taste favorite. It’s pleasantly “chocolatey.” Not only does it keep you from getting hungry, it’s convenient – no blending required on any of the Ready-to-Drink flavors.

Of course, better taste and convenience comes with the even higher price tag that afflicts all of the Ready-to-Drink flavors. Sigh… getting thinner can thin your wallet as well!

Ingredients: Water, soy protein isolate, fructose, sugar, gum arabic, maltodextrin, cocoa (processed with alkali), cellulose gum, canola oil, soy lecithin, soy oil, salt, lactic acid, acesulfame potassium, modified cornstarch, corn syrup solids, natural and artificial flavors, carrageenan, dextrose.

Medifast French Vanilla Ready-to-Drink Shake - 90 Calories

This flavor is lactose-free. It contains gluten and soy. It is certified Kosher (dairy).

Taste Rating: 8/10

This is classic vanilla taste is made so much more convenient as a grab-and-go drink. It’s satisfying and reliable. Nothing spectacular but definitely beats its powder-mix counterpart.

Ingredients: Water, soy protein isolate, gum arabic, fructose, sucrose, maltodextrin, calcium phosphate, cellulose gel, canola oil, dipotassium phosphate, natural & artificial flavors, potassium chloride, salt, lecithin, lactic acid, soy lecithin, modified food starch, acesulfame potassium (non-nutritive sweetener), corn syrup solids, carrageenan.

Medifast Mocha Ready-to-Drink Shake - 110 Calories

This flavor is lactose-free. It contains gluten and soy. It is certified Kosher (dairy).

Taste Rating: 9/10

We’ve saved the best for last! This delicious grab-and-go mocha diet shake will remind you of your favorite coffeehouse frappuccino, minus the calories. And yes, it does work at keeping your cravings at bay for a few hours.

And speaking of coffeehouses, don’t forget that this flavor has caffeine – 80 mg of it, in fact – so consider that if caffeine is not your thing.

Ingredients: Water, soy protein isolate, gum arabic, fructose, sugar, maltodextrin, propylene glycol, cocoa (processed with alkali), cellulose gum, canola oil, natural and artificial flavors, soy lecithin, soy oil, salt, lactic acid, ethyl alcohol, caffeine, acesulfame potassium, carrageenan.

Overall Verdict

Medifast weight-loss shakes work as they should – they keep you feeling full and keep your calories low, all while giving you the nourishment you need.

The Ready-To-Drink shakes are more convenient than the powdered mixes, and better tasting too, with a smoother consistency. With the Ready-to-Drink, you don’t have to worry about getting the powder to fully dissolve which can be an issue. We’d spend the extra money for the Ready-to-Drink over the powdered mixes. Let’s face it: both types are expensive, one a little more so.

All in all, we think Medifast shakes are a fine tool to ward off hunger, but as you would expect, they are hardly a gourmet treat. But you didn’t really expect Ben & Jerry’s, did you?
